Captain Updike
I hope all is well ... Not sure if you've seen this or not, so I thought I'd share the link with you in case you didn't
I stumbled across this video with audio of Mrs WP Becker being interviewed about the start of the Civil War ... Her interview starts at 4:42 and lasts to 8:58
Its hard to hear, but it sounds like she was staying at the Mills House at the start of the Civil War when her fiance, who was from Charleston and a Citadel grad stationed at Morris Island at the start of the war, got enough leave on his birthday to go into Charleston to get married to her ... but then had to go right back ...
She described how the war started with the Star of the West trying to reinforce Anderson at Fort Sumter ... and mentions a note that she was given (presumably from her husband?) with the order to "keep a sharp lookout" ... which she eventually turned over to the Atlanta Library
Mrs Becker said after the bombardment of Fort Sumter, her husband and the troops on Morris Island went over to Fort Sumter to collect any spoils they could ... which apparently included a piece of the flag staff that her husband picked up and gave to her
Its absolutely amazing to see and hear this short clip ... of someone who tells about being in Charleston as the south opened up on Fort Sumter, and who was married to a Citadel grad who was a Confederate Officer who participated in it
